South O.C. physicians’ group joins St. Joseph Health

The Mission Internal Medical Group will join the growing network of hospitals and physicians

Mission Internal Medical Group, a Mission Viejo-based physicians’ group, has become an affiliate partner of St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare, a state foundation and part of the St. Joseph Health network.

The partnership means that Mission Internal Medical Group (MIMG) also becomes part of the larger parent St. Joseph Health network of hospitals, medical centers, health care providers, physician groups and other organizations.

"We are proud to expand our network of physicians to include MIMG," said Darrin Montalvo, executive vice president for St. Joseph Health’s Southern California region. "Today, health care delivery organizations are looking to build larger networks to support new health care models. Our new relationship with MIMG truly fulfills a shared vision of expanding our ability to provide compassionate care, promote health improvement and create healthy communities."

St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare (SJHH) is a statewide physician practice organization, which provides member groups with resources and services in the areas of preventive care and education, electronic medical records and an online patient portal. The organization has won praise and recognition from the Integrated Healthcare Association and the National Committee for Quality Assurance, two groups that promote healthcare management service quality.

Mission Hospital will work closely with the MIMG physicians as part of the new alliance. Kenn McFarland, president and CEO of Mission Hospital, said the news makes for an exciting day for the hospital and for south county residents.

“This affiliation is a catalyst to extend our mission and enhance widespread, quality-driven community health care," McFarland said. "At Mission Hospital, we have always worked to ensure our communities receive excellent services delivered by outstanding people. And now, with this affiliation, we will bring even more to the people we serve.”

C.R. Burke, president and CEO of St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare, said the foundation is excited to expand its list of physicians to include “the well-respected doctors of MIMG.”

"When we looked to expand our presence in south Orange County, SJHH was careful to seek out like-minded doctors – those who have a proven track record of providing excellent care and delivering value. The MIMG doctors are an exceptional fit for SJHH."

Two founding members created MIMG in South Orange County 40 years ago, and the group has since grown to a 71-physician member association, representing 11 internal medicine specialties and serving nearly 150,000 patients. The group is also credited with providing unique patient services, including cardiac diagnostic studies, a sleep center, and a medical travel clinic. The group’s member physicians also conduct clinical trials and ongoing research in the areas of cardiology, endocrinology, pulmonology and rheumatology.

"Recognizing the realities of health care today, MIMG has been seeking the right organization for affiliation for some time. Partnering with St. Joseph Health will provide us with a great opportunity for future growth and continued success," says Rudy Marquez, M.D., president of Mission Internal Medical Group. "We are happy to be joining a network that is equally dedicated to its communities."
