Models from two O.C.-based auto manufacturers honored for their safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety selected the Mazda3 and Mitsubishi Lancer for their ability to absorb collisions.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer and the 2012 Mazda3 as Top Safety Picks this year. This marks the fifth year in a row that a Mitsubishi vehicle has been named on the list. The Mazda3 sedan and hatchback models each received the IIHS’s highest crash safety rating of “good” in all four tests conducted.
Top Safety Picks must earn the “good” rating in three areas of crash test analysis: high-speed front impact, high-speed side impact and an evaluation of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear-impact crashes.
"Mazda3 is an important vehicle for Mazda on so many levels," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "Making up nearly 60 percent of our year-to-date car sales, Mazda3 is … our best-selling car. …"
Mitsubishi Motors has enjoyed sales success with its Lancer. Given its safety award recognition, the company has expanded the Lancer lineup with a new 2012 Lance SE AWC (All Wheel Control).
"When we launched Top Safety Pick in 2005, consumers had 11 models to pick from," said IIHS President Adrian Lund. "It's tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority."
