More than a million holiday enthusiasts are expected to attend the 104th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade for five consecutive nights kicking off Wednesday, Dec. 19 through Dec. 23. The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chambers of Commerce invites all to enjoy the “Surf, Sand and Santa!”-themed parade that will feature multi-million dollar yachts, sailboats, kayaks, canoes and many other boats of all sizes as they brighten up the Newport Harbor with holiday lights, carolers and cheerful tunes. Decorated boats will travel 14 miles giving viewers in restaurants, yacht clubs, homes and on the beach the ultimate Christmas experience. On the last night of the parade a special fireworks show will launch off the Balboa Pier for everyone in the harbor to enjoy.
In addition to the holiday boat parade, the Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Ring of Lights contest. Bayside homes and surrounding business go “all out” with decorations including everything from animated rooftop scenes to dancing Christmas trees. The Ring of Light is a classical tradition of its own as viewers can stroll along the harbor throughout the holiday season.
With traditions dating back to before WW1 and once known as the Tournament of Lights, the magical tradition began merely 98 years ago and is now recognized as “one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” by the New York Times and named Yahoo Travel’s #2 City in the Nation for Holiday Lights.
The holiday cheer will go well into the year with an awards dinner and auction on Friday, January 25, 2013 honoring Boat Parade and Ring of Lights competitors. The gala will be held at the Balbo Bay Club where the public can enjoy live entertainment, dancing and a live and silent auction.
