Newport Beach-based Mobilitie ups wireless coverage on 241 toll road

Company partners with TCA, Caltrans on improvement project.

If you've ever traveled on the 241 toll road in Orange County, you know that wireless coverage is remote in some areas – if it's available at all. But Newport Beach-based Mobilitie, a wireless and telecommunications company, is working to change all this by adding four new cell-phone sites along the roadway between Irvine and the 91 Freeway.

The company is partnering with the Transportation Corridor Agencies, which operates O.C.'s 67-mile public toll road system, and the California Department of Transportation – CalTrans – on the improvement project. With the increasing reliance on cell phones for business and during roadway emergencies – flat tires, engine troubles – both agencies feel that the lack of coverage is a public-safety concern.

The new wireless sites, which will be near Loma Ridge, Presida Canyon, Irvine Lake and Windy Ridge, are expected to increase safety and convenience for those who travel on the toll road. Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T will share these communication facilities.
