Newport Beach steps up tourism marketing

Assessment creates funds for more aggressive promotion of city’s offerings to attract tourism dollars.

OC METRO staffPublished: June 10, 2009

The Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID), approved by the Newport Beach City Council earlier this year, is intended to bring business to struggling hotels impacted by the decline in tourism and business travel.

The new benefit assessment district is modeled after other programs throughout California that have successfully boosted hotel stays and improved overall tourism. The assessment includes hotels that are considered “group sales” oriented. They include: Balboa Bay Club & Resort, Fairmont Newport Beach, Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, Newport Beach Marriott Bayview, Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa and Radisson Hotel Newport Beach.

The 2 percent tax on room rate was implemented mid-May and is expected to generate funds that will be used to increase the marketing efforts of the Newport Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. The hotels in the program are expected to benefit from the increased promotions.
