Cypress-based Nitto celebrates Angels home opener

The tire-maker is a sponsor of the team and will give away commemorative T-shirts at tonight’s game.

This year marks the golden anniversary of Angels baseball, and attendees at today’s home opener will get commemorative T-shirts, courtesy of the Cypress-based tire manufacturer Nitto.

The Angels’ 50th anniversary logo adorns the front of the red shirts. On the back, in fine print, the names of all 853 Angels players, coaches and managers since the team’s origination will be displayed.

“The Angels have provided countless memories to generations of Southern Californians,” said Nitto marketing representative Robin Howland. “We hope this T-shirt and the names that adorn it will hold a special place in the hearts of all Angels fans.”

The Angels joined Major League Baseball in 1961 as an expansion team. The team’s competitive history started with a 7-2 win against the Baltimore Orioles on April 11, 1961, when veteran slugger Ted Kluszewski hit two home runs.

The Angels take on the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. The game starts at 7:05 p.m.
