The board of directors will consider the bus service reduction Nov. 23.
The reduction is necessary to make up for major cuts in state funding,
significant drops in sales tax and fare revenues. To date, 233,000
hours have been reduced to bring service levels in line with available
revenue.
The plan proposes eliminating eight routes on weekdays,
maintaining Night Owl service until 1 a.m., reducing frequency on 11
routes, restructuring eight routes and reducing trips on one route.
The
impact on the community was discussed at length and committee members
expressed frustration at being forced to make these difficult cuts.
However, given the financial realities, the plan attempts to keep as
much of the service as possible throughout the county.
"OCTA realizes how difficult these cuts will be for the thousands of people who depend on bus service in their daily lives and we are doing everything possible to try and minimize the impacts," says Joel Zlotnik, spokesman for OCTA. "OCTA does not want to be cutting bus service but because of the financial crisis we are facing with the loss of state dollars, sales tax and fare revenue declines, we have to be responsible to the taxpayers of Orange County and bring service in line with the available funding."
