OCTA's ridership soars

For the third consecutive month, buses and Metrolink experience large amounts of passengers.

With the state of the economy and higher than usual gas prices, more and more people are using public transportation to get to work, school or play. Orange County Transportation Authority bus ridership was 12 percent higher in September of this year compared with the same month last year.

That number follows after 6.2 million riders were recorded in July and another 6 million in August. Metrolink, which runs through Southern California, also saw a 29 percent leap this September as compared to last year.

And even though we've had some relief at the pumps, it seems some residents are finding public transportation systems to be a more cost-effective way to travel. Commuters in the region can save an average of almost $700 a month through the buses, saving a total of almost $8,000 a year.
