The local music industry will take the spotlight for the next seven weeks, as the 10th annual O.C. Music Awards season kicks off tonight at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa.

This year, 35 local artists are competing for Best Live Band and Best Live Acoustic titles, plus a performance slot at the main event on March 5.

In addition to the main honors, the academy has added two new awards this year – Best Youth Band and Best Music Video.

Five bands are set to perform in each showcase, which will be held on Tuesday evenings leading up to the O.C. Music Awards event. Venues include Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa, The District in Tustin, The LAB in Costa Mesa and The Slidebar in Fullerton.

The top bands are chosen by O.C. Music Awards Academy Members, who include local music critics, talent buyers, promoters and studio owners.

Band nominees are judged on originality, stage presence, crowd participation, song composition and overall performance.

The final contenders for the Best Live Acoustic band will compete at Fullerton Museum on Thursday, Feb. 24, and The Best Live Band finals will be held at The Galaxy on Friday, Feb. 25.
