O.C. bankruptcies spike nearly 60 percent in January
1,269 individuals and businesses filed last month.

Photo courtesy of FotoliaThe number of businesses and individuals in Orange County who filed for bankruptcy last month jumped to 1,269. It's a 58.6 percent hike, compared to the same time last year, according to statistics released by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District in California.
What's more, it's the highest total for January over the past 10 years. In 2000, there were about 800 recorded.
But, the number did drop slightly from December, when 1,308 filings were reported, according to the court.
