The Orange County Rescue Mission is trying to ease the impact of the recession on underserved families during the holidays by asking local businesses and residents to lend a hand.

The nonprofit organization has delivered more than 780,000 meals to families this year, according to O.C. Rescue Mission President Jim Palmer. That's about 470,000 more than last year, which is due, in part, to the economic downturn.

What's more, the agency is facing a shortage of necessities because of such high levels of demand in recent months.
