Orange County loses more than 6,000 jobs over the month

But region's unemployment rate remains unchanged from July.

Orange County lost 6,200 jobs between July and August, according to just-released stats from the state's Employment Development Department. The region's unemployment rate is 9.6, unchanged from July's revised total. For the year, 63,600 positions have been eliminated.

A bright spot came from the construction industry, which reported the largest month-over-month gain, according to the EDD. Some 500 positions were added, though for the year, the industry posted the second largest decline, falling behind trade, transportation and utilities. Since August 2008, 12,000 construction positions were cut.

The news falls in line with a number of recent announcements that indicate the recession is coming to an end, including a report from the Commerce Department stating that housing starts posted a slight increase in August, and that initial unemployment claims were down last week.
