O.C. Great Park Design Team honored, continued ...
The Great Park design was lauded as exceptional by the society. "Adopting the graphic language of an airfield in a fresh, contemporary way is absolutely the most dramatic thing that could be done and a brilliant political move."
Smith also won an ASLA Honor Award for the Museum of Modern Art Roof Garden in New York City. Mia Lehrer, of Mia Lehrer Associates and a Great Park Design Team member, received an Honor Award for the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan.
The 27-acre Preview Park serves as a visitor and observation center, as well as a prototyping area for Great Park projects. The first phase of the Preview Park opened with an orange helium-filled balloon that ascends 500 feet into the air. The park also offers models for orange groves, stonework and planting that will be implemented throughout the development.
The Orange County Great Park is a 1,347-acre metropolitan park on the site of the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. When finished, it will boast a 2.5-mile canyon, sports park and botanical gardens, among other features.
