Orange County auto sales down in May

Slight increase from last month, however, offers hope.

Orange County automakers continue to post year-over-year declines in sales, with the largest decrease coming from Brea-based Suzuki. The company is reporting a 75 percent drop from May 2008. But there was a slight uptick in numbers between April and May. Fountain Valley's Hyundai and Irvine's Kia continue to sell the most models, and Kia saw its third straight month of increases. Here's a breakdown:

Fountain Valley-based Hyundai Motor America
May sales: 36,937
April sales: 33,952
Increase: 9 percent
Decrease over May 2008: 20 percent

Irvine-based Kia Motors America

May sales: 26,060
April sales: 25,606
Increase: 1.8 percent
Decrease over May 2008: 16 percent

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations
May sales: 16,718
April sales: 16,139
Increase: 3.6 percent
Decrease over May 2008: 40.1 percent

Cypress-based Mitsubishi Motors North America
May sales: 4,352
April sales: 3,919
Increase: 11 percent
Decrease over May 2008: 58.3 percent

Brea-based American Suzuki Motor Corp.

May sales: 2,585
April sales: 2,543
Increase: 1.65 percent
Decrease over May 2008: 75 percent
