Orange County in April experienced the third largest percentage decrease in employment among the 32 U.S. metropolitan divisions measured, according to statistics released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Metropolitan divisions are defined by the agency as separately identifiable employment centers within a metropolitan area.

Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine payrolls fell by nearly 5 percent over the year. The number follows only Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, Mich., with a 6.2 percent drop, and Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, Mich., with an 8.4 percent decline.

In terms of metropolitan division job losses, Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, Ill., reported the largest amount, with 171,300 positions cut.
