Passenger traffic at JWA jumps 10 percent

However, air taxi operations at the airport drop by almost 59 percent.

Passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport jumped almost 10 percent in January over the same period last year, but the number of take-offs and landings fell 7 percent.

The airport served more than 650,000 passengers last month, compared to about 590,000 passengers in January 2009. Commercial carrier flight operations increased as well – by 3.2 percent. That means more passengers a flying, and they're flying on commercial carrier flights, said airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge.

However, air taxi operations, dropped by nearly 59 percent, and total aircraft operations decreased by 7 percent, with a little more than 15,000 take-offs and landings. The airport tracked just more than 16,600 last year. That drop is due, in part, to American Eagle's decision to discontinue service to the Bay Area in November, Wedge said.

John Wayne airport is owned and operated by the County of Orange and governed by the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Originally built in the 1920s as an airstrip, it became a publicly owned facility in 1939.
