Oceanfront coastal alliance hotels give back to the community

BY LAUREN GIUDICEPublished: August 01, 2010

The dog-friendly Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort
Oceanfront coastal alliance hotels have been hard at work this summer spearheading programs aimed at raising funds for – and awareness about – a number of local nonprofit efforts.

The dog-friendly Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, for example, raised $50,000 for Paws For Cause during a celebrity gala in July. Paws For Cause looks to bring hope, love and encouragement to people in difficult situations, including disadvantaged children, seniors, the homeless, shut-ins and disaster victims.

The Balboa Bay Club and Resort’s 1221 Club awarded $67,000 in scholarships to 12 deserving high school students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The students and families were recognized during a special awards presentation and reception at the resort.

On the environmental front, the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa is doing its part to raise awareness about the critical role that cork plays in curbing climate change. The hotel recycles all of its wine corks, and every guest who donates a cork gets a dollar off the price of selected wines. The corks are turned over to ReCORK by Amorim for recycling into shoes.

And a collaboration between The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel and Jean-Michael Cousteau resulted in the launch of an Ambassadors of the Environment education center at the resort. Among the center’s offerings: excursions led by nature experts and sport fishing. (The day’s catch is cleaned and donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.)

Share Our Selves – also commonly known as SOS – was given the Community Partner of the Year Award from the Public Law Center at its annual Volunteers for Justice Awards dinner. SOS Executive Director Karen McGlinn  with Orange County Superior Court Judge Kim Dunning (pictured, left) accepted the honor. The nonprofit serves the impoverished and working-poor populations in O.C. Its Costa Mesa facility is also home to a legal clinic – the result of a partnership between SOS and the Public Law Center, which operates on a walk-in basis.

“The Public Law Center and Share Our Selves are a model of collaboration, together keeping families in their homes, preserving our neighborhoods and keeping children safe and secure in their homes and schools,” says SOS Social Services Operations Officer Vanessa Ontiveros. “Working together promotes equal access to justice, a critical value of our legal system.”

• Knots of Love is joining with Southern California drug and alcohol rehabilitation homes to teach patients in recovery how to knit and crochet. The repetitive nature of these hobbies helps people relax – a perfect remedy for recovering addicts.

• The 21st annual Waterman’s weekend raised more than $400,000 to protect oceans and surf breaks locally and around the world. More than 650 professional surfers flocked to Laguna Beach for the golf tournament and ball. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Tom Curren and Al Merrick were each honored during the event.
