Santa Ana’s Powerwave: a mecca for wireless coverage

The world leader of wireless coverage and capacity has brought wireless connectivity to the holy city of Mecca.

By Susan BelknappPublished: March 25, 2009 10:48 AM

Every year, more than 2.4 million pilgrims visit the holy city of Mecca, and though they may not be carrying cell phones in their robes, friends and relatives can keep tabs on their progress because of a system designed by Powerwave Technologies Inc. That is, if they resided in or visited the enormous King Abdul Aziz Endowment in Saudi Arabia.

Powerwave Technologies, the developer of innovative wireless infrastructure systems that address the demands of enterprise and commercial customers – outfitted the state-of-the-art building system for the King Abdul Aziz Endowment. The King Abdul Aziz is considered the largest collection of buildings in the world with floor space totaling 1.4 million square meters.

The largest collection of buildings demands the world’s largest indoor wireless coverage system, so in 2008, Powerwave and its Saudi Arabian partner, Advanced Communications and Electronics Systems Co. Ltd. (ACES), were selected by Mobily Saudi Arabia, the second largest wireless operator in the Middle East, to deploy a wireless coverage system inside four of the seven towers currently comprising the King Abdul Aziz Endowment.
