![]() Tieman, 46, of Rancho Santa Margarita, was a health educator who was looking for a way to reach a mass audience. What’s one product with a mass audience? Well, coffee. Who runs around thinking he can invent his own coffee? Someone as determined as Tieman. Now he’s trying to get the American coffee consumer to think of a new term: “fusion coffee.” At his Santa Fe Springs roasting house, Tieman has fused his Big Three – the goji berry, matcha and rooibos – to the coffee bean: A 10-ounce package retails for $9.99. “It’s the healthiest drink you will have all day,” Tieman says. “We’ve improved the flavor of coffee. It gives you more coffee flavor than regular coffee. And it doesn’t leave you with ‘coffee mouth.’”Is Vons or Ralphs next up? Tieman’s first goal is to be sold at every Albertsons. American consumers are looking for low-cost ways to stay healthy, and Tieman’s coffee, he says, is loaded with antioxidants and is good for the heart and immune system. If Tieman’s has a future as a top coffee brand, it may be all about “the buzz.” After all, that’s why people drink coffee; it gives you a lift to start your day. Tieman claims his buzz will last four to six times longer than regular coffee; it’s the Red Bull of coffees. Can a new company make it in this tough economic time? Tieman says yes. Company: Tieman’s Coffees and Teas Headquarters: Rancho Santa Margarita; the roasting is done in Santa Fe Springs Start-up costs: About $500,000, says Tieman, but he counts into that a combination of sweat equity and time. Actual cash start-up, he says, was about $200,000. Company size: 10 Light-bulb moment: “When we did the first taste tests beyond our families and employees; people said to us, ‘This is really great coffee.’” |
