Quantum Fuel Systems signs deal with Fisker Automotive

The two Irvine-based companies are partnering on the solar-roof design for the Karma luxury hybrid.

Irvine-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies has signed a deal with Fisker Automotive to develop a car roof that will provide solar power for the automaker’s luxury Karma hybrid.

Officials from Quantum and its German solar partner Asola Advanced and Automotive Solar Systems say it will be one of the most spherically bent car roofs in the world. It will generate 130 watts of clean renewable electricity, and the design will help keep the car’s interior cool in hot weather.

“This large solar photovoltaic roof is a signature feature of the Fisker Karma,” said Quantum President and CEO Alan P. Niedzwiecki.
