![]() The high-performance diesel hybrid electric powertrain took six years to develop. The four-wheel-drive train will be produced for specialized military uses and commercial applications. This is the most recent project for the company, which also produced the Q-Drive for Irvine-based Fisker Automotive's Karma sports sedan. When fully charged, the green luxury auto doesn't burn fuel for the first 50 miles. Once the electric range is reached, it operates as a normal hybrid. The Q-Force offers high acceleration and extended range, among other features, that will benefit the U.S. Army in communications, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance, according to Quantum President and CEO Alan Niedzwiecki. He also says it is "well-suited" for homeland security, border patrol, park-service operations and light-duty vehicles.
