Quest Software survey reveals emphasis on virtualization in 2012

More than half of the IT respondents will allocate more resources into virtual-based applications.

In a survey recently conducted at separate 2011 VMworld events in Las Vegas and Copenhagen, Denmark by Aliso Viejo’s Quest Software Inc., more than half of the 235 info-tech managers and administrators who responded indicated that at least 25 percent of their 2012 budgets will go to “virtualization” projects – virtual adaptations of hardware platforms, operating systems, storage devices, network resources and the like.

VMworld, reportedly attended by thousands this year, focused on the growing use of cloud-based infrastructures and virtual applications in business technology. The cross-section of IT professionals who attended the events included those at the executive-level, as well as end users such as systems, network, database, digital storage and virtualization specialists.

"Virtualization management of both servers and desktops is quickly becoming a high IT priority, as businesses virtualize more mission-critical workloads and embrace desktop-virtualization solutions,” said VMworld attended Mark Bowker, senior analyst of the Enterprise Strategy Group. “Quest Software is in a unique position with an ability to deliver management solutions for both server and desktop initiatives and help companies accelerate the value of virtualization and discover improved return on its investments."

The top priorities for IT spending on virtualization initiatives in 2012, according to the study’s results, include plans to improve business agility, deliver cost savings, meet increasingly demanding user expectations and manage the growing mobile workforce.

“The results of this survey reinforce what we’ve been hearing from customers recently – that the implementation of virtualization across servers and desktops has moved from proof of concept to production environments,” said Carl Eberling, chief technology officer of Quest Software. “As this has occurred, customers now fully realize the complexity involved with managing the overall environment.

“Now, more than ever before, IT needs a complete management solution set that lets them leverage this dynamic environment for the good of the business, giving them the agility and responsiveness they need to properly address their powerful and ever-demanding users,”  Eberling said.
