The upcoming Quiksilver Pro New York – billed as the largest music and action-sports event ever assembled – will take place in Long Beach, New York, from Sept. 1 to 15.
Thirty-four elite pro surfers from the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour will be coming to New York to compete for surfing’s first-ever $1 million event purse. The competition will take place during the best four days of waves in early to mid-September. Admission is free.
The fun will start on Labor Day weekend with Quiksilver-, DC- and Roxy-sponsored athletes on hand to meet fans and perform a series of skate, BMX and motocross demos. Eight nights of music will follow; headlining bands such as The Flaming Lips, Girl Talk, Interpol and Taking Back Sunday will strut their stuff, along with a special benefit concert hosted by Kelly Slater & Friends on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Slater, universally considered to be one of the top surfers of all time, is a spokesperson and branding star for Quiksilver. Last month, he won the U.S. Open of Surfing, an event sanctioned by the ASP that took place in Huntington Beach.
"I grew up on the East Coast listening to the music of my parents’ generation ... country, folk, singer-songwriter type stuff. Most of it I swore I hated, but some of it has stuck with me forever," says Slater, a 10-time ASP World Champion. "I've been lucky enough to meet a lot of artists I knew through our vinyl records and became good friends with a couple. We've got a surprise guest playing this year with a few guest appearances thrown in. I think the event is going to be a really fun night for everybody and something I haven't experienced before."
“We’re very excited to perform at the Quiksilver Pro – the first event of its kind on the East Coast,” said Interpol’s Paul Banks. “As we hail from that part of the country, we are happy to contribute to a collective call of ‘Surf’s Up!’”
The Quiksilver Pro New York, supported in part by Vitamin Water, is the second stop in the Quiksilver Pro Global Series, which also includes the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia and the Quiksilver Pro France. Admission is free.
