![]() Dr. Lawrence B. Werlin Great strides in medicine have been made since the first test tube (IVF) baby was born in 1978. More women are having successful births than ever before. Coastal Fertility has been there every step of the way, utilizing the most cutting-edge procedures. “Our field is so dynamic and constantly changing, it’s exciting,” said Werlin, a nationally honored specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. “We’ve learned so much more as to what helps make up a healthy embryo.” Werlin should know. He started working in the reproductive medicine field back in 1982 as an assistant professor at UC Irvine. Then in 1986, he became Hoag Memorial Hospital’s Medical Director for fertility services. Werlin left that post in 1995 to found Coastal Fertility. He is also presently a clinical professor at UC Irvine and has authored multiple papers in reproductive medicine. Werlin was the principal investigator in the first randomized prospective study on the use of Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS/PGD) and published this groundbreaking study in 2003. Initially, genetic diseases were screened, then later, chromosome abnormalities. Werlin has had great success in helping older women achieve healthy pregnancies; in fact, the average age is 38. He has been practicing for so long that he now routinely receives high school and college graduation announcements from the children of his patients. And every year, Coastal Fertility holds a Halloween party for patients and their children that has grown to include 700 attendees. “It makes me feel great to be part of this process,” Werlin said. “You get an emotional bond with these patients.” The practice offers a free monthly fertility seminar to enlighten patients on the proposed journey.
