The number of small and mid-sized businesses in Orange County that sold in May was down 35 percent compared to the same time last year, according to statistics from BizBen, a Web site that specializes in the sale of California companies.

While 288 firms were sold in May 2008, only 212 were reported last month. This is the 10th straight monthly decline in year-over-year sales.

Where month-to-month sales are concerned, there is some good news. May sales were up 144 percent compared to April. And excluding April, the amount of businesses sold in the region has generally been on the rise this year: January, 80; February, 92; March, 123; April 87; and May, 212.

Statewide, 1,859 companies were purchased in May. It's a 25 percent drop from the same time last year.
