The number of small and midsize businesses in Orange County that sold in June fell 48.9 percent compared to the same time last year, according to statistics from BizBen, a Web site that specializes in the sale of California companies.

Only 94 firms were sold last month, compared to 184 in June 2008. The number also fell drastically from May, which saw a total of 212 businesses purchased.

The decline signals a continued hesitancy among buyers, due to the tough economic climate.

For the previous six months, 688 small and midsize firms were sold in the region, compared to 1,274 in the same period last year. It's a 46 percent decline, according to BizBen.

Statewide, 986 businesses were sold in June, down from 1,637 at the same time last year.
