Santiago Canyon College in Orange and Illinois-based Grainger Foundation are partnering up on an effort to improve the school's public works programs. SCC garnered a $10,000 grant that will advance its Career Technical Education main classroom.

The school's public works offerings have a strong reputation, according to Tricia Evans, dean of the SCC Career Technical Education Division. But she says the classrooms were definitely in need of an update. Unfortunately, the state's budget crunch has negatively affected community colleges' ability to pay for improvements.

The funds were used to create a mini-conference center that will be used for the school's California Code Enforcement Officer training program, for new green and sustainable building code classes and for its ongoing public works courses, continues Evans.

“Grainger has a strong commitment to technical education here and across the country,” says Ashley Potts, a local Grainger branch manager. “In Orange County, we have a shortage of skilled labor and by providing this gift for improving learning facilities, we can make a positive impact on students’ environment.”
