Assemblyman Solorio seeks to stop sale of O.C. fairgrounds

Assemblyman Solorio submits legislation on the Assembly floor to repeal the sale of the fairgrounds.
The debate over the Orange County fairgrounds continues to gain steam: California Assemblyman Jose Solorio on Wednesday sent a letter to Gov. Schwarzenegger requesting him to stop the sale of the 150-acre venue. The document presented a number of concerns, mainly focusing on the legitimacy of the sale.

Solorio, who represents the 69th Assembly District, which includes Anaheim, Garden Grove and Santa Ana, was originally among 76 legislators who voted for the sale of the venue in July in an attempt to balance the state's budget. The fairgrounds were then put up for auction in October by the state.

But a public hearing held by Solorio and Assemblymember Van Tran in November sparked questions, as many residents, business people and local officials voiced their concerns regarding the pending process and its affect on the region.

In his letter, Solorio states that the action is "not in the best interest of California or Orange County." He also introduced legislation that would, if approved, repeal a section of an Assembly bill connected to the sale.

Solorio's letter questions the amount of money the auction of the property would garner. The original estimate is between $96 million and $180 million.

"Potential bids for the property most likely will be nowhere near the estimated purchase price," he says.

Solorio believes that is due to the weak real estate market, Costa Mesa City Council's opposition of the measure and its work to restrict the property's zoning.
