![]() The South Coast Plaza offices in Costa Mesa have received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Plaza Tower, Center Tower and Park Tower received the distinction for operations and maintenance. They are the first multitenant buildings in California to garner the honor in this category, as well as three of the first four buildings in the U.S. to be awarded. “Sound environmental management is good for business and part of our rich heritage as an industry leader who views environmental stewardship as a responsibility to our tenants and to our greater community,” says Henry Segerstrom, managing partner of the offices of South Coast Plaza. The LEED-EB in operations and maintenance certification program accredits sustainable buildings through the implementation of universally accepted tools and performance criteria. The rating system identifies and rewards best practices and provides a groundwork for buildings to conserve natural resources and improve their indoor environments, among other strategies. As part of the program, the three office towers will reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by more than 9.5 million pounds a year. They will also reduce water usage by more than 3 million gallons annually. This is a key reduction in the carbon output from these buildings, according to the retail center.
