I’d never known what the concept of being pampered really means. I’m constantly on the go and always running short on time. Every once in awhile, I might paint my own nails at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday while watching “Nick at Night” television shows, but that’s about as close as it gets. I gained an understanding of true pampering, however, with a visit to The Spa at the Island Hotel.
There, I was greeted with smiles, green tea and comments such as, “Welcome, Ms. Scholz” and “Right this way, Ms. Scholz.” Already, I was feeling warm and fuzzy, and I hadn’t even met my massage therapist. I had scheduled the Island Volcanic Detoxifying Therapy from resident masseuse Siako Thornton. The ritual began with an exfoliation to soften and cleanse my skin. Then Thornton smoothed volcano clay over my skin to cool and purify my body while massaging my feet to balance my body and soul. Whatever toxins that inhabited my body were sure to be gone after this two-hour treatment.
The ingredients in the clay are all natural and botanical, and they carry a pleasing citrus scent.
By the time my treatment was ending, I was relaxed to the point of near-sleep. Then Thornton surprised me with more tea, water and fruit skewers to enjoy.
This summer, The Spa at the Island Hotel is offering a number of specials. On weekends, you can treat yourself to two soothing 60-minute spa treatments for a discounted rate. And be sure to try the indulgent pedicure. This luxurious vegan-inspired service features the Spa Ritual Collection, with an organic bath salt cleanse, organic sugar scrub and a calf massage, followed by the application of an organic moisturizer or oil to relieve dry, cracked heels. The offers are available until Aug. 31.
Now that my body knows what it feels like to be pampered, I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back to those impromptu 1 a.m. home pedicures. I think I’ll give Thornton a call instead.
