Spectrum Pharmaceuticals makes key move for bladder cancer drug

Irvine-based firm inks deal to market apaziquone in South Korea.

Irvine-based Spectrum Pharmaceuticals is collaborating with Handok Pharmaceuticals to develop and commercialize its nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer treatment, apaziquone, in South Korea. Handok will pay Spectrum more than $19 million in upfront and potential milestone fees.

It's a positive move for Spectrum: The collaboration completes the firm's Asian partnerships for apaziquone. Spectrum is also working with Irvine-based Allergan to commercialize the drug for North America and Europe, among other markets, as well as Nippon Kayaku Co. for Asian countries except South Korea.

“This collaboration with Handok completes the company’s stated objective of achieving solid strategic partnerships that are aimed at fully exploiting developmental goals for apaziquone on a worldwide basis,” says Rajesh C. Shrotriya, M.D., chairman of the board, CEO and president of Spectrum.
