Sperry Van Ness International has collaborated with Better World Books, a social venture that supports global literacy. The Irvine-based commercial real estate broker will ask its clients to place a book drop box in their offices, and Better World Books, headquartered in Indiana, will notify local communities about the boxes.

Better World Books collects and donates books to countries around the world that face illiteracy problems, including nations in Africa and Latin America. The for-profit company also sells books online, with a percentage of the proceeds going to global literacy programs. With each book purchased online, the company will donate a book to a country in need. Better World Books has kept more than 65 million books out of landfills through recycling and donations, and has raised more than $10 million for literacy programs.

“This project also allows Sperry Van Ness advisors to build more meaningful relationships with community stakeholders as well as owners of commercial real estate,” said Sperry Van Ness president and CEO Kevin Maggiacomo. “Sperry Van Ness International is committed to looking for ways of improving our business that embrace corporate social responsibility. Our partnership with Better World Books demonstrates Sperry Van Ness International’s support of the company’s mission and our commitment to being a true value-added partner in the real estate community.”
