The Harlem Globetrotters

These amazing roundballers will appear at Honda Center.

by larry urishPublished: February 01, 2012

As the race to the NBA playoffs heats up this month and continues into the spring and early summer, basketball fans (derived from the word “fanatics”) from throughout the world get drawn in the very serious – and often fierce – competition like moths to a flame. Sometimes they get a bit too serious.

Roundball freaks – as well as O.C. residents of every sort, sports fans or otherwise – looking for a welcome break in this intensity will enjoy an appearance by the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters, who will showcase their athletic wizardry at Honda Center on Saturday, Feb. 18, at both 1 and 7 p.m. One-of-a-kind ball-handling exhibitions, nothing-but-net over-the-shoulder shots from half court, bucketfuls of flying confetti – and water, to the chagrin of at least one opponent or referee – and an assortment of gags involving crowd members are included in the show.

For more than eight decades, Globetrotter games have featured a blend of top-notch basketball skills and off-beat theater and comedy. The team’s O.C. appearance is part of its 2012 North American World Tour, composed of nearly 270 games in 46 U.S. cities – plus locales in Canada.

Along with the current roster, notable rookies include 7-foot-8-inch “Too Tall” Hall, 5-foot-2-inch “TNT” Maddox (the tallest and shortest Globies ever), and 2011 College Slam Duck Contest champion “Hops” Tucker, who has as astounding 50-inch vertical jump; that’s about double the average leap.

Honda Center’s $30-per-person Family 4-Pack includes four hot dogs and four sodas – plus a whole lot of fun. hondacenter.com

Fact: The Harlem Globies have entertained popes, kings, queens and U.S. presidents.
