Cowabunga!

Coinciding with Surf City USA’s centennial celebration, Huntington Beach has granted a one-time permit for the renowned Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge, which ran uninterrupted from 1977 to 1989 and from 1992 to 1998.
The event, to take place Jan. 20 to 24, will feature 32 teams of four surfers: two pros and two amateurs. The team results will be determined by the placement of the individual entrants. Participating teams will feature many sponsored by the top names in surfing, such as Quiksilver, Volcom, Billabong, Future Fins, Reef and Rusty.
Founded in 1977, the Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge has an impressive history. Past winners include such surfing icons as world champions Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Sunny Garcia and Kelly Slater. Other top-notch Katin alums include Mark Richards, Mark Occhilupo, Joey Buran, Michael Ho and Larry Bertleman. Rarely do amateurs have the chance to share swells with the best of the best, and a number of Katin up-and-comers have gone on to enjoy outstanding pro careers.
Although most surfing events have been held on the south side of Huntington Beach’s world-famous pier, the city is allowing the Katin Pro/Am to use the north side because of its historical significance. The three-day contest, free to the public, will begin early in the morning and continue until midday.
