The Broken Compass: on to Panama

By Bret and Chad van RodenPublished: March 01, 2010

Last October, two 20-something professionals, twins Bret and Chad van Roden, left promising jobs – Bret was a credit associate at Union Bank in Irvine – to go on the voyage of a lifetime. They purchased an oceangoing sailboat that they renamed the Broken Compass, and last October began circling the globe.

As the van Rodens’ adventure continues, OC METRO is following Bret, Chad and Makai, their playful Siberian Husky puppy, as they enjoy their voyage.

This month's Broken Compass dispatch:
Bahia Drake, in southern Costa Rica, boasts good surfing and diving, as well as lots of monkeys. While there, we tested the 30-hp engine on Firefox, our 14-foot dinghy, as it pulled each of us on our new surfboards purchased from a shaper up north.

The next day, we dove off a nearby reef and took some decent parrotfish and about a dozen oysters – great food. We shared the extra fish with a couple we met the previous evening and later enjoyed drinks and foosball at a bar overlooking the bay.

Makai, our Siberian Husky, sighted her first monkey and climbed halfway up a tree to get a closer look. The monkeys threw branches at the puppy as she clung nearly 6 feet off the ground.
