St. Joseph Health System will lay off 159 workers

Reduction affects all levels of staff at three O.C. hospitals and corporate office.

Orange County's health care sector is facing tough news this week: St. Joseph Health System announced Monday that it plans to lay off 159 of its workers. The cuts go into effect Sept. 14.

All levels of staff at the agency's three local centers – St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, St. Joseph Hospital of Orange (right) and Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, as well as the corporate offices, also in Orange – will be impacted. But very few nurses are being cut, according to spokesman Kevin Andrus, and doctors are not included in the layoffs.

About 9,000 workers are employed by St. Joseph in Orange County, and the layoffs account for about 1.7 percent of that number.

The move comes as a response to multiple economic factors such as the recession, losses from investments, and shrinking federal and state reimbursements, says Andrus. The health care centers have also seen a greater number of people without insurance coming through their doors.
