Surf City USA Half Marathon organizers gear up for big year
An influx of runners, many of them female, will compete in the February event.

An influx of runners – many of them women – have Surf City USA Half Marathon organizers gearing up for what could be the most successful event in the race's 14-year history.
Set for Super Bowl Sunday, the Surf City USA Marathon is the largest combined oceanfront marathon and half marathon in the state. And the marathon has already sold out – the latter is close behind. About 18,000 entrants compete in three divisions, the marathon, half marathon and 5K, among other festivities.
Some 13,000 runners will take part in the half marathon, and about 64 percent of these participants will be women, according to Surf City USA Marathon General Manager Amy Tomchak.
The half marathon is currently ranked among the top 12 marathons in the nation and No. 3 in the state, and, due to the women participants, it could jump into the top 10. But first, it must pass up the Disneyland and Nike Women's races, which are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the state.
