The Bottom Line

Steve Churm's key issues in 2010, continued ...Published: December 01, 2009

4. What brands are most trusted in Orange County? A landmark survey by advertising agency DGWB and OC METRO will reveal the winners in April. It’s not about who’s hot or most popular. It’s about love and trust between consumers and their brands. Did you vote? Go to ocmetro.com/mosttrustworthybrands.

5. In real estate-driven Orange County, The Irvine Co. is rolling the dice – and $250 million – that homebuyers are ready to spend again. Seven new projects in Woodbury go to market next year. Their success may signal whether the industry has turned around.

6. Broadcom co-founder Henry Samueli is back at the helm of the Anaheim Ducks and, equally important, so is his wife, Susan. Dogged by a stock option scandal, will they regain the title of O.C.’s most giving couple now that his SEC troubles are history?

7. Will Angels owner Arte Moreno re-sign fan favorites John Lackey or Chone Figgins to new deals? Will they ink any free agents? The best team in baseball this decade, the Angels have been a positive distraction from a lousy economy. But a World Series title in 2010 would be even better medicine. Write the check, Arte.

8. Irvine’s “my way or the highway” attitude has done little to win friends in O.C. But America’s only Korean-born mayor, Sukhee Kang, and his collaborative style have softened the city’s sometimes-brutish image. But will he get re-elected next November?

9. Irvine automaker Henrik Fisker and his hybrid autos are for real, but will enough buyers think so?

10. Is the Great Recession really over? Will somebody let me know so I can e-mail my overworked and tired staff? Thanks. schurm@churmmedia.com

re#2&10: The dichotomy of Wall St & DC vs Main St & Joe the Plumber must be resolved in a way that does not include the present economic fear of the future, which is paralyzing consumers & small business owners. Our out-of-touch Congress/Administration & Media MUST listen to the voice of the real people "in the trenches" and respond to their needs, for real turnaround. The arrogance of those big players thus far has not allowed for progress in that area.

You nailed it on the 241. We need it. Gridlock is getting worse on the I-5. Thousands of us waste hours every week commuting on the I-5. Pendleton is growing too. They need an alternate route. Good ideas. Keep pitching it so there is some hope of relief ahead.

#7. And may I add to your "Write the check, Arte?" "Change the name back, Arte!" Anaheim Angels win World Series Titles!
