Construction is now complete on four new cell towers along the 241 toll road from Irvine to the 91 freeway. National service providers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon are now installing cell service equipment. Metro PCS, will be available on-air later in 2010.

The improved coverage is expected to make the commute safer for the many drivers who travel the road to work, school and other activities.

“Providing enhanced cell phone coverage and service on the 241 Toll Road was important to us because so many drivers use their hands-free devices while driving and, especially, because in times of emergency a cell phone can be a life line,” says Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency Chairman Peter Herzog.

Construction of the new towers began in June. The development was a partnership between Sprint and telecommunications infrastructure firm Mobilitie, and Caltrans and the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency.

The new cell towers were designed to be visually appealing and to blend in with the surrounding environment.
