UC Irvine's Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences has garnered a $20 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health aimed at supporting the quick transformation of scientific discoveries into medical uses for patients.

The Clinical & Translational Science Award – or CTSA – is the sixth largest in UCI history, and the medical research institution is the first in Orange County to receive this grant.

The award puts UCI in a nationwide consortium of 55 CTSA honorees. Membership will reach no more than 60 by 2012.

"The grant will jump-start our endeavors to build effective multidisciplinary research teams to tackle important health issues,” said Dr. Dan Cooper, primary CTSA investigator and director of the Institute for Clinical & Translational Science, which was founded in 2006 and is located at UCI Medical Center.

The funds will support a number of efforts, including the development of devices that can identify diseases in exhaled breath, pilot platforms, and biostatistics, study design and bioethics research.

The grant may also aid in facility development, the hiring of nursing and study coordinators, training new scientists and incorporating community partners into the institute's research projects.
