UCI Allergan lecture examines climate change locally

The Modern Biology lecture series, ‘Climate Is Changing Globally. Dare We Act Locally?’ is tonight.

By Susan BelknappPublished: October 13, 2009 03:05 PM

As a part of the Allergan Foundation Lecture Series in Modern Biology, UC Irvine scientists Michael Prather and Diane Pataki will speak tonight. The subject: Climate is Changing Globally. Dare We Act Locally? The lecture takes place Tuesday night, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., at the Arnold & Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences & Engineering on the UCI campus.

Allergan Foundation, an affiliate of Irvine-based Allergan Inc., funds the lecture series. Allergan is health care company, which provides eye care and specialty pharmaceutical products worldwide. The series is designed to educate people about biological advances that one day may affect their lives.

Prather, Fred Kavli chair, UCI Environment Institute director and Earth system science professor, will review the current scientific understanding of global warming.

Pataki is an earth system science and ecology & evolutionary biology associate professor; she will address options for mitigating and adapting to changes locally.

Over the last two centuries, people have mined and burned fossil fuels, cleared forests, and developed agriculture and industry. The resultant pollution of the Earth's atmosphere is driving climate change.

Discussion will include frequently asked questions and common misconceptions about climate change. The School of Biological Sciences is hosting the event.

The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. Reservations are required and may be made at 949.824.2500 or biosci-events@uci.edu. For more information on the event, contact Alyssa Cruz at 949.824.4742 or alyssac@uci.edu
