The new center will hasten research that will impact those with Alzheimer’s, spinal cord injuries, diabetes and macular degeneration. Donovan, whose voice cracked with emotion during his opening remarks, spoke of the importance of the mission of those involved in advancing the cures for diseases that have affected so many. The 100,000-square-foot facility, funded by a combination of $27.2 million in Prop 71 stem cell research funds and a $10 million gift from Laguna Beach philanthropists Sue and Bill Gross, is the first building in the state designed exclusively for stem cell research, solidifying Southern California’s designation as a leader in biomedical innovations. Additional funding came from private donors and the University of California. Chancellor Michael Drake said, “The work that will go on in the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center will lead to discoveries that will make tomorrow better than today.” He added, “There are miracles waiting around the corner, and actually the miracles are waiting in the building here behind us - waiting to be discovered.” Many dignitaries were on hand including Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, representatives from Gov. Schwarzenegger’s office and Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang. Sue and Bill Gross were lauded in a prepared statement from Gov. Schwarzenegger: “I applaud Sue and Bill Gross for their generous donation towards this important work and helping to put UC Irvine on the cutting edge of stem cell research.” Mayor Kang said the facility will “reach out and touch a lot of people for decades and decades to come.” |
