UC Irvine, Plug Power test fuel cell technology

Partnership will study system for providing homes with electricity, heat.

UC Irvine's National Fuel Cell Research Center is participating in groundbreaking residential fuel cell tests along with New York-based Plug Power. The collaboration will study the latest technology for providing electricity and heat to homes.

The $3.4 million partnership, which also includes Southern California Gas Co., is a beneficiary of the $42 million funding for fuel cell technology from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act announced last week by Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

The three-year program aims to test the readiness of Plug Power’s combined heat and power GenSys product for use. If applicable, GenSys will be able to replace traditional furnaces and boilers, and create electricity and high-quality heating for consumers. The trial fuel cells will be installed in visible locations in Southern California.
