UC Irvine faculty may get 8 percent pay cut

Number would apply to staffers making more than $46,000.

UC Irvine faculty and staff who earn more than $46,000 could face an 8 percent pay cut, and those who earn less could see a 4 percent slash on their paychecks, according to a letter issued this week by UC President Mark Yudof.

But UCI isn't alone: Cuts are necessary at all UC campuses statewide to help balance California's $24 billion budget deficit.

UCI employs 20,882 full- and part-time workers, which includes student and faculty staff, as well as Medical Center employees. The institution is the largest employer in Orange County.

Nearly all of UCI's 1,200 full-time faculty members make more than $46,000; 29 academic faculty members earn less than $46,000, most of whom are lecturers in the University Extension program, according to spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon. And 56 percent of 9,000 staff workers earn less than $46,000, according to a May report.
