![]() The seminar has featured an assortment of presentations and lectures that have focused on various ideas about sustainability on a global scale. Some of the many topics include human-induced changes to the environment (with a look at the world’s marine and freshwater resources); the effects of globalization and capitalism on sustainability; and the relationship between religion and sustainability. One presentation will deal with this issue from a perspective that’s much closer to home: a review of case studies dealing with preservation efforts along the Orange County coastline, which will take place tomorrow at 3 p.m. The seminar has featured some 70 representatives from 20 countries, including China, India, Russia, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Spain, Israel, Norway and South Africa, among others. “This is an extraordinary event that we hope will be the first of many,” said John Whiteley, UCI professor of social ecology. “Bringing together this impressive group of young leaders from throughout the world to focus on sustainability, globally and in their own countries, has great potential to make a difference in the future of the environment. We are confident that the participants will learn as much from each other as from the formal presentations.” All of the remaining lectures will take place in UCI’s Education Building, Room 111 (bldg. 3, grid G11 on the campus map). • Today’s lectures are as follows: 9 to 10:30 a.m. – Jerome Nriagu of the University of Michigan will discuss "Environmental Justice & Disproportionate Exposure of Communities to Environmental Pollutants." 2 to 3:45 p.m. – Sergio Knaebel, grants director for the Sandler Foundation, and Serge Dedina, executive director of WildCoast, will discuss "Preserving the Mexican Coast." • Friday will feature the following: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. – Jack Miles, UCI professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "God: A Biography," will discuss "Can Religion Help Preserve the Environment?" 3 to 5 p.m. – Case studies about efforts to preserve the Orange County coastline will be presented. The entire week’s agenda can be viewed here. “Empowering Sustainability on Earth” is free and open to the public today and tomorrow. To make a reservation, call 949.824.1874.
