By Kristen SchottPublished: March 03, 2009 09:15 AM

UC Irvine scientists garnered a five-year, $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to research the brain region connected to language abilities. The results could stem clinical research and treatment of developmental and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism.

Through the study, UCI researchers and cognitive science professors Gregory Hickok and Kourosh Saberi hope to learn more about the overall functions and abilities of the planum temporale, which is located within the auditory cortex of the brain in both the left and right hemispheres.
