Discoveries show that musicians who have "perfect pitch" have an asymmetric left planum temporale, while schizophrenia is most commonly found in people with an enlarged right planum temporale. Those who suffer from autism typically do not have normal asymmetry.
"We still don't know how all of the observations about the planum temporale fit together," says Hickok. "Are there any connections, any common denominators, among the wide range of abilities and disorders linked to this brain region? We think there are, and that is what we are working to figure out."
The funding will allow the researchers to map the planum temporale's functional organization. Through MRI technology, they will study brain activity and the use auditory and motor skills.
