Irvine’s VIZIO sues LG for patent infringement

In another ongoing action, Funai is denied a request to delay an antitrust suit with VIZIO by U.S. District Court.

VIZIO, America's No. 1 manufacturer and seller of HDTV and consumer electronics, announced Friday that it filed an infringement lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland against LG Electronics Inc., a Korean maker and seller of digital televisions, related components and other products, and its wholly-owned subsidiary LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc.

VIZIO alleges in the suite that LG infringes numerous patents in its manufacturing, importation and distribution of certain products including high definition TVs.

VIZIO is seeking an injunction prohibiting LG from importing and selling infringing HDTVs and is also seeking award of damages for past infringing sales.

VIZIO also announced Friday that the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California has denied attempts by Funai Electric Company Ltd. to delay the prompt resolution of VIZIO's claims that Funai is unlawfully restraining trade, misusing its patent rights, and monopolizing the marketplace for digital television technology.

In lawsuit filed in February, VIZIO alleges that Funai unlawfully acquired the rights to U.S. patent No. 6,115,074 (the "'074 patent"), which is subject to a standards setting organization overseeing digital television manufacturers, and has since unlawfully and unfairly discriminated against VIZIO in the licensing and enforcement of the '074 patent, to the detriment of trade and commerce.
