![]() The fourth annual Quiet Achiever award honors local individuals who have made a positive social or economic impact on the region and its residents – now, and in the future. And Ames is no different. “Joe Ames saw a need in Orange County and responded with vision and action that has resulted in thousands of children realizing the full benefits of education in our county,” says Bob Waltos, managing partner of The Waltos Group. “His initiative and leadership created a program that is based upon real-world fundamentals and one that encourages families to advocate for their children as they chart their futures through the educational system." The Latino Education Attainment initiative assists Latino parents with supporting and advocating for their children. It also stresses the importance of education throughout these neighborhoods. About 44 percent of children in Orange County's public school system are Latino, according to the O.C. Department of Education's 2008 Community Report, and many students fall behind in key measures such as graduation rates and grade point average.
