  • The popularity of martial art forms is surging. Much of the allure has been brought by the Ultimate Fighting Championship and mixed martial arts (MMA) craze, which is resulting
    in the evolution of many traditional disciplines.

    However, these forms are more than modes of exercise or fighting techniques; they are disciplines of mind, body and spirit. Every martial art form builds strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance while developing integrity, honor and respect for yourself and others.

    Additionally, martial arts have a universal appeal. Everyone – young, old, male, female, individuals or families – can benefit from these disciplines.

    “Couples and families are finding they can train together,” says Sophia Koo, instructor at the U.S. Blackbelt Academy. “This often results in a shared hobby and improved quality time.”

    Located in Laguna Niguel, the academy is riding the wave of the martial arts resurgence.

    “The facility has expanded its studio and will be opening a second location in Aliso Viejo in early 2009,” says Koo. Owner and Master Ivan Kravitz and his staff have more than 30 years of combined experience and are linked to networks such as Royce Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing.

    Muay Thai is an ideal fitness option. Muscle & Fitness magazine rated it the No. 1 calorie-burning exercise. A 60-minute workout includes warm up and stretching;
    kicking and punching drills interspersed with Thai-pad and heavy-bag training; and spot strengthening for upper body, abdominal, thigh, hip and glute muscles.
